Missionary Moments Planning Guide

AUGUST 2010

August 8, 2010: Evangelism and Church-Planting Strategies

Morning: A WORKER in West Africa is teaching evangelism and church-planting strategies in a Baptist seminary in his city. This enables future pastors and missionaries to plant churches among Muslim populations in the country. He has seen two commitments to missions recently. God is using our faithful participation in CP to plant churches in areas that are generally closed to the Gospel. “Your gifts have enabled us to touch two continents. Those who have received the Word will one day learn [of ] your partnership with us,” he says. “Until that day, we thank you on their behalf.” Pray for the workers in West Africa and for those who are risking their lives to plant churches in these areas. Luke 12:20-31

August 8, 2010: Reaching Hispanics in Nebraska

Evening: In Nebraska, there are 200,000 Hispanics, but only 14 Southern Baptist churches. North American missionaries LARRY and KAREN LOPER are working on the eastern side of the state among Hispanic pastors, leaders, and congregations striving to plant reproducing Hispanic churches. Their ministry is focused on resourcing, equipping, motivating, networking, recruiting, and training Hispanic church planters so that they are prepared to fulfill the Great Commission. Our commitment to putting love in action through the Cooperative Program is a vital and functional part of Larry’s team effort to reach Hispanics in Nebraska and lead them to a relationship with Christ. Take a moment to lift up the Lopers and the Hispanic population of Nebraska in prayer. STATEMENT: Jesus told about a rich farmer who kept an abundant harvest for his own selfish use. Without a thought of giving thanks or giving to help others, he built larger barns. Giving helps free us from such selfishness.

August 15, 2010: Genesee Baptist Association

Morning: Genesee Baptist Association in Michigan is made up of 33 churches and missions in the two-county Flint, Michigan, area. As a North American and associational missionary, JIM MARCUS works with churches and pastors to strengthen them, resource them, and assist them in fulfilling their mission of reaching, discipling, and ministering to unbelievers. MARGARET serves in the associational office, and she also plans support and fellowship times for the wives of church planters, pastors, and staff members who serve in the association. The needs in Michigan are great, but so is our God. With the help of our prayers and our faithful participation in the Cooperative Program, the Marcuses will strengthen and encourage existing churches and start new ones. Include the Marcuses and the people of Flint, Michigan, in your prayers during the week. Proverbs 30:7-9 Two things I ask of You; don't deny them to me before I die: Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me. Give me neither poverty nor wealth; feed me with the food I need. Otherwise, I might have too much and deny You, saying, "Who is the LORD?" or I might have nothing and steal, profaning the name of my God.

August 15, 2010: Good News in Asia

Evening: PETER and RACHEL COBB are working to spread the Good News in a city in Asia. Three-and-a-half years ago, a local woman and her son received church-multiplication training from the Cobbs. At the time, their group had 25 believers. Today, because of the training, their group has multiplied into eight groups of 25 to 30 believers, each with their own Sunday worship service. The Cobbs and their local partners have led more than 2,000 people per year to a saving faith in Christ Jesus over the past five years. Because of your commitment to reaching people through CP and God’s grace, there are now fourth generation Christians and third generation churches in this Asian city. Thank God for what He is doing in this city, and pray that He will continue to multiply the Cobbs’ ministry. STATEMENT: Managing well the material things which God provides takes maturity. Our goal should be to maintain balance between too little and too much. Maintaining balance frees us to grow in our giving, and giving helps maintain balance.

August 22, 2010: Strategy Coordinators in Taiwan

Morning: MIKE and CAROLYN MILLER serve the Lord in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, as strategy coordinators. Kaohsiung is a metropolitan city of 2.5 million people, but with only a 1 to 3 percent Christian population. The Millers are working to increase that percentage through “seeker” Bible studies. The Millers are starting a new bilingual church and another house church this year. Recently they baptized three new believers who attended their house church! In order for the Millers to increase their impact on this important city, they need our fervent prayers and our commitment to making a difference through the Cooperative Program. Please make praying for the Millers a priority this week. 2 Thessalonians 3:11-12 For we hear that there are some among you who walk irresponsibly, not working at all, but interfering with the work [of others]. Now we command and exhort such people, by the Lord Jesus Christ, that quietly working, they may eat their own bread.

August 22, 2010: African-American Church Planters

Evening: Nearly 75 percent of Ohio’s eleven million people claim no religious affiliation. North American missionaries QUINTON and DIANE MOSS are the African-American Church Planter Strategists serving on the church planting team of the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio. Quinton embraces his responsibility to seek out and identify potential church planters whom God is calling to start a new work. The task before them is daunting, but with your prayers and your faithful participation in CP, Quinton and Diane can strengthen existing churches through evangelism and discipleship so that they will multiply and start new churches to reach the millions living in the Buckeye state. Add the Mosses to your prayer list this week. STATEMENT: A willingness to work and provide for oneself and family is a good testimony for the Lord. It also makes possible giving through our church to help share the Gospel.

August 29, 2010: North American Missionary, Steve Murdock

Morning: As state director of missions for the Baptist Convention of Iowa, North American missionary STEVE MURDOCK helps Iowa Southern Baptist churches start new churches and provides training for church planters and Korean and Hispanic pastors. With a population and culture that is primarily Catholic and Lutheran in background, the Murdocks are working and praying for churches to be strengthened, for more churches to be started, and that unbelievers would hear and respond to the life-changing message of salvation. Steve and LISY are grateful for our commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program, which empowers them to share Christ across the state of Iowa. Thank you for praying for the Murdocks this week. Romans 14:12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

August 29, 2010: All Things To All People

Evening: JOHN and AMBER GOETKE are strategy coordinators for an unreached people group in Asia consisting of primarily non-literate farmers who learn through oral Bible storytelling. This year, John and Amber have partnered with a local brother who has a heart for this people group and is willing to move away from city comforts. Recently the Goetkes attended week-long training about agriculture that will give them the access they so desperately need with this rural people group. Picking up the yoke and plow, John and Amber are becoming all things to all people to bring the message of eternal life. We are part of this effort as we faithfully give to the Lord through our church and as our church participates in the Cooperative Program. This unreached people group and the Goetkes need our prayers in the days ahead. STATEMENT: Giving an account of our actions does not have to be dreaded. When we have followed Christ in our living and giving, accounting is a time for rejoicing.
